"Sea lions on a shirt"
I had a good nights sleep after all my travels and woke up ready to enjoy a drizzly Tuesday! Though the weather didn't cooperate, Helen had the day off so we had fun together all day! I was on a quest for new sunglasses so we wandered into town (after we had properly fueled ourselves with coffee). Everything down to the garbage
cans here are different from North America. It's a refreshing change! It's hard to explain, but I guess the word for it is quaint. Anyways we went to the shopping mall and ended up finding the most perfect t-shirt/souvenir. Helen is a whale nerd just like me so we just had to buy this t-shirt when we spotted it! I have to explain that the soccer World Cup is about to begin, and everyone knows how Europeans are about their football. Everyone is getting geared up here, even though it is very doubtful that England will make it past semi-finals. The crest of the English team
is 3 lions as seen in the picture! Back in 1996 two guys wrote a song about how the English haven't won the cup in thirty years called "Three Lions on a Shirt", which became the anthem for the English team in the world cup that year. The song gets reproduced every year now. We found a shirt that had three sea lions on it instead of lions. Basically just a joke at the English football fans expense. But really we
just bought them because they had sea lions on them and said England. The really strange part is that there aren't any sea lions in this part of the world! Helen has since shown the shirt to all here friends/co-workers at the aquarium, and now they have all got one as well. The store is probably at a loss for why the shirts have sold so well!
The rest of the day was spent wandering up the beach to Helen's favorite cafe and
enjoying ginger lattes.
Then heading to the aquarium to retrieve Helen's bike and having another good look at all the different tanks.
For dinner I got a taste of the local cuisine in the form of mushy peas! It is in fact what it sounds like...mushed up peas, but it was actually delicious I am happy to report! We had it on rice cakes with cream cheese, and I ended up just eating them with spoon in the end! That evening I got to meet a group of Helen's really nice, but crazy friends! We had a really nice time and a good laugh. An excellent second day!
